AP exam registration open through Oct. 18 for May 2027 exams

MADISON, Wis.—The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is reminding students and families that registration for May 2027 Advanced Placement (AP) exams is open through Oct. 18. Students who plan to take an AP exam must complete registration by the deadline.

AP exams give students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in college-level coursework while potentially earning college credit, which can translate to real post-secondary tuition savings. MMSD offers AP courses and testing opportunities across a wide range of subjects at its high schools.

“Students have a lot to keep track of during the school year, and we want to make the AP registration process as straightforward as possible,” said Tim Peterson, MMSD director of assessment. “We encourage students to talk with their teachers, review the exam information and take care of registration before the deadline so they can focus on preparing for their exams.”

The 2027 AP testing cycle also includes changes to how several exams will be administered. AP Language and Culture exams in Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, German and Spanish, as well as AP Spanish Literature, will be fully digital. Students will complete multiple-choice and free-response questions in the College Board Bluebook testing application, with speaking portions also completed digitally. AP Music Theory will use a digital hybrid format combining digital content with a written component.

Other AP exams will use either fully digital or hybrid digital formats. For hybrid exams, students will complete multiple-choice questions and view free-response questions digitally in Bluebook while handwriting their free-response answers in paper exam booklets.

All regularly scheduled MMSD AP exams will be administered at the Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall. Students and families can find the full May 2027 AP exam schedule, estimated testing times and testing-day information on the district’s AP Testing in Madison webpage.

Families who have recently qualified for free or reduced-price meals may be eligible to have all AP exam fees covered by MMSD. Families must have their application completed and approved before registering for AP exams in order to receive fee coverage.

Students seeking testing accommodations must apply separately through the College Board. Accommodations included in an IEP or 504 plan do not automatically apply to AP exams. The current deadline for accommodation applications is Jan. 22, 2027.

Students and families are encouraged to visit the MMSD website for registration instructions, exam schedules, information about digital testing, fee assistance, accommodations and other testing-day requirements.
