MADISON, Wis.—Emily Sonnemann, a family and consumer science teacher at Madison Metropolitan School District’s East High School, has been named the 2026 ProStart Educator of the Year by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation.

The award recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in culinary and restaurant management education while preparing students for careers in the hospitality industry. As this year’s Wisconsin honoree, Sonnemann will be considered for national recognition through the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

Sonnemann brings 16 years of experience in education, having taught in Madison, Monona Grove and Minneapolis. At East High School, she has built a dynamic culinary program that connects classroom learning with real-world experiences, including student participation in the Wisconsin ProStart Invitational, the ProStart Career and Industry Expo and other events.

“Emily’s impact extends far beyond the classroom,” said Patrice Haste, principal of East High School. “She creates meaningful opportunities for students to explore career pathways, develop real-world skills and feel supported in every aspect of their lives. This recognition is a reflection of her passion, creativity and deep commitment to her students.”

In addition to her work in culinary education, Sonnemann has played a key role in supporting the broader East High community. She helped establish and sustain the school’s Food4U Market, which distributes up to 3,000 pounds of food each week to students and families in partnership with Second Harvest Foodbank of South Central Wisconsin. She also supports student engagement through initiatives such as the school’s Bike Repair Club.

Sonnemann said the recognition reflects the work of her students and the strength of the East High community.

“Our students bring so much curiosity, creativity and determination into the classroom every day,” Sonnemann said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help them build skills, explore their interests and see what’s possible for their futures.”

Through her work, Sonnemann continues to bridge the gap between classroom learning and career pathways, helping students gain the knowledge and experience needed for success after graduation.
