MADISON, Wis.—The 30-day window for community members to submit proposals to rename the Madison Metropolitan School District’s Conrad A. Elvehjem Elementary School and Charles Lindbergh Elementary School is now open and will close on April 29, 2026.
The submission period marks the first step in a process that includes community input, committee review and final consideration by the Board of Education. The district will also convene an ad hoc renaming committee for each school to help review submissions and recommend potential names.
“This process is an opportunity for our community to come together and reflect on the values we want our schools to represent,” said Dr. Carlettra Stanford, assistant superintendent of schools and learning. “Through thoughtful engagement, we can help ensure our school names reflect the experiences, aspirations and shared priorities of our students and families.”
Submissions must include the significance of the proposed name and its connection to the Madison community, in alignment with district policy.
Each renaming committee will be representative of the broader community and will review submissions before identifying up to four finalists for consideration. The committees will also host public engagement opportunities before forwarding recommendations to the board of education, which will make final decisions.
“This marks an important step in a process that centers community voice and shared ownership,” said Chelsey Tubbs, associate superintendent of educational programming, who is leading the renaming efforts for both schools. “We are looking forward to hearing from students, families, staff and community members as we move through this work together.”
MMSD has recently used this process to select the permanent name for Lori Mann Carey Elementary School (formerly Southside Elementary School) and to rename Thomas Jefferson Middle School as Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School.
