MADISON, Wis.—The Madison Metropolitan School District’s (MMSD) Freedom Schools summer program is returning for summer 2026, continuing its work to provide students with an engaging learning experience centered on literacy, leadership, cultural exploration and social-emotional growth.

Hosted this year at Lori Mann Carey Elementary School, the program serves students currently in third, fourth and fifth grades and runs from mid-June through the end of July. Freedom Schools combines academic enrichment with hands-on activities, leadership development and community-building experiences designed to help students grow both inside and outside the classroom.

“Freedom Schools is focused on building belonging, nurturing student voice and helping young people see themselves as leaders and changemakers,” said Marisa Flowers, MMSD Freedom Schools executive director. “The Freedom Schools experience will transform how our scholars show up in their schools and across the district, ensuring they return to MMSD classrooms this fall with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to lead and succeed.”

Rooted in the legacy of the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools movement, the program emphasizes literacy and student voice while encouraging curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.

Students participate in daily literacy activities, collaborative projects and lessons designed to strengthen reading comprehension and reignite a love of learning. The program also incorporates leadership development, cultural exploration and social-emotional learning through group discussions, creative activities and community-centered experiences.

Freedom Schools reflects the district’s broader commitment to providing students with engaging, culturally responsive learning opportunities that extend beyond the traditional school year.

The program is staffed by trained educators and mentors committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. Families are also encouraged to remain actively engaged throughout the summer through ongoing communication and participation opportunities.

More information about the Freedom Schools program, including a link to apply, is available on the MMSD website.
