MMSD schedules public hearings for Elvehjem and Lindbergh renamings
MADISON, Wis.— The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) will hold two virtual public hearings on Thursday, July 23, as part of the ongoing renaming processes for Conrad A. Elvehjem Elementary School and Charles Lindbergh Elementary School.
The hearings mark an important milestone in the district's community-driven naming process, which seeks to ensure school names reflect the values, history and identity of the Madison community. The Citizens' Naming Committees have reviewed community-submitted proposals and will release the proposed names under consideration on Thursday, July 16.
Community members are invited to attend the hearings, which will be livestreamed on the Board of Education’s YouTube page, and provide live or written feedback before the committees finalize up to four recommendations for each school to forward to the Board of Education for consideration.
The hearings will take place via Zoom according to the following schedule:
- Conrad A. Elvehjem Elementary School: Thursday, July 23, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Charles Lindbergh Elementary School: Thursday, July 23, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The renaming process for César Chávez Elementary School is following a separate timeline and is not included in these hearings.
"We are immensely grateful to our Citizens' Naming Committee members and chairs, the Elvehjem and Lindbergh school communities, and the Board of Education for their exceptional leadership in this endeavor,” said Chelsey Tubbs, MMSD associate superintendent of educational programming. “We warmly invite our students, families, staff and neighbors to join the livestreams or submit written statements and further their involvement in this process. Their perspectives are vital as we take this meaningful step forward together."
Community members wishing to speak during either hearing must register in advance through the district's online public engagement portal. Written comments may also be submitted through the portal.
Additional information, including the full lists of submitted names, hearing details and links to participate, is available on the district's Elvehjem and Lindbergh school naming webpages.
