MADISON, Wis.—More Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) students took the ACT in the 2025–26 school year, and more earned some of the exam's highest possible scores, reflecting continued student engagement in college readiness opportunities across the district.

Approximately 10% more MMSD students sat for the exam, compared to the previous year. The district also saw an increase in the number of students earning composite scores of 35 or 36, with 37 students reaching that benchmark this year, up from 31 in 2024–25.

The ACT is one of the nation's most widely used college admissions assessments, measuring student readiness in English, mathematics, reading and science. State-wide data is expected to be published in the fall.

"Our top-level results show more students participating and more students achieving at the highest levels, both of which are very encouraging," said Tim Peterson, MMSD's director of assessment. "When participation increases, maintaining strong performance becomes even more meaningful because it reflects achievement across a broader group of students."

MMSD continues to prioritize rigorous coursework, academic supports and college and career readiness opportunities designed to help students prepare for success after high school. Students across the district have access to Advanced Placement courses, dual-credit opportunities, career and technical education (CTE) pathways and other experiences that support their postsecondary goals.

Peterson noted that ACT results represent just one measure of student achievement, but remain an important indicator of college readiness and academic preparation.

"We are proud of the students who earned exceptional scores, but we're equally proud of the many students who challenged themselves by taking the exam and exploring future opportunities," Peterson said. "Each student who participates gains valuable information about their strengths and next steps as they prepare for life after graduation."

The increase in both participation and top scores comes as MMSD continues its broader focus on academic excellence, literacy and equipping students with the necessary for success in life beyond the classroom.
