MADISON, Wis.—The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) are continuing their longstanding Middle Schools of Hope partnership, providing students with academic tutoring, coaching and after-school enrichment opportunities during the 2026–27 school year.

The MMSD Board of Education recently approved continued funding for the partnership, which provides services at nine of MMSD’s 12 middle schools. The program has served MMSD students for more than two decades, connecting students with academic support and caring adult mentors.

During the 2025–26 school year, ULGM served 878 students through tutoring programs, including 761 MMSD students. Another 516 students participated in after-school enrichment activities, including 366 MMSD students. Nearly 90% of students who regularly participated in tutoring reported that their tutor helped them persist through difficult work, feel valued as learners, stay motivated to attend school and feel like an important part of their school community.

“Students thrive when they have strong relationships and a network of people invested in their success,” said Cindy Green, MMSD assistant superintendent of strategy and innovation. “Middle Schools of Hope is an important example of what we can accomplish when our schools and community partners work together to support students both inside and outside the classroom.”

Middle Schools of Hope provides individualized tutoring and coaching in areas such as math, literacy and study skills, along with after-school opportunities focused on STEM, college and career exploration, cultural enrichment and leadership development.

“Every young person deserves a trusted adult who believes in them and helps them realize their potential,” said Dr. Ruben Anthony Jr., president and CEO of ULGM. “Our partnership with MMSD demonstrates what is possible when schools, families, community organizations and volunteers work together.”

MMSD and ULGM are seeking community members to serve as volunteer tutors. Volunteers commit to at least one hour per week and work directly with middle school students as academic supports and positive role models.

Free volunteer training sessions will be offered by MMSD staff on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Thursday, Sept. 24. The training will cover tutoring expectations, school procedures and best practices for supporting student learning.
