One week left to submit renaming proposals for Elvehjem and Lindbergh Elementary Schools

Member News

MADISON, Wis.—Community members have through Tuesday, April 29, to submit renaming proposals for the Madison Metropolitan School District’s (MMSD) Conrad A. Elvehjem and Charles Lindbergh elementary schools.

Submissions must include the significance of the proposed name and its connection to the Madison community, in alignment with district policy.

The 30-day proposal period opened late last month as the first step in a multi-phase process that includes community input, committee review and final consideration by the Board of Education. An ad hoc renaming committee will be convened for each school to review submissions and recommend potential names. Each committee will be representative of the broader community and will identify up to four finalists before hosting public engagement opportunities and forwarding recommendations to the board, which will make final decisions.

"This is an important opportunity for students, families, staff and community members to help shape the future of these schools," said Chelsey Tubbs, associate superintendent of educational programming, who is leading the renaming efforts. "We encourage everyone who has ideas or perspectives to share to submit them before the window closes."

MMSD has recently used this process to select the permanent name for Lori Mann Carey Elementary School (formerly Southside Elementary School) and to rename Thomas Jefferson Middle School as Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School.
